2010 Fighter of the Year: Cain Velasquez

UFC 110
February 21, 2010
Sydney, Australia

Cain Velasquez becomes the first man in the history of the sport to KO Heavyweight Legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Nogueira, a veteran of 40 MMA fights, fell victim to a brutal upper cut right hook combo that was followed by a handful of filthy blows after Big Nog was dropped to the ground. This earned Velasquez #1 Contender status in the UFC Heavyweight division.

UFC 121
October 23, 2010
Anaheim,California

Velasquez ended Brock Lesnar's reign as UFC Heavyweight Champion in magical fashion on this night. Cain stayed focus surviving an embarrassing early Brock outburst, and eventually finished the contest on his own terms via TKO fashion in the 1st Round dishing out the Beatdown of the Year. Velasquez enters 2011 as arguably the most exciting Heavyweight Champion in the history of the promotion with his biggest test to date still ahead of him in the form of Brazilian Powerhouse Junior Dos Santos.

Runner up: Jose Aldo

Honorable Mentions: Frankie Edgar, Nick Diaz, Chris Leben, Jon Jones

Heavyweight King Cain Velasquez sidelined 6-8 Months

Mike Chiappetta reports that UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez will be unable to defend his title against #1 Contender Junior Dos Santos.

Velasquez suffered a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder during the Brock Lesnar fight that my require surgery. (Josh Gross)

Cain's first title defense in the UFC was rumored to headline the upcoming UFC 129 Toronto card but will now be pushed back to late summer. Best case scenario for JDS after playing the waiting game for 6 - 8 months, a shot at the title in Brazil on August 27th. We all hope to see a healthy Cain return well before then though.

2010 Fight of the Year: "Chris Leben is a Zombie"

UFC 116
July 3, 2010
Las Vegas, Nevada

Name me a match up in the UFC Middleweight division that could possibly be more exciting than Wanderlei Silva vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama. Replace an injured *Axe Murderer* with *The Crippler*, sit back, and watch the fireworks ensue.

"I am not pleased with the change. There are just ten days left until the contest for me to determine [Leben's] threats and the time is insufficient to establish a tailored gameplan. Leben is also not as high profiled as Silva and that does not help me." - Akiyama responds after hearing the news of his new opponent (Daum.net)

" I don't know a ton about Akiyama...I saw him fight Alan Belcher and to be honest with you, I thought he lost that fight. He's a good Judo guy, he's got great Judo, fast kicks, maybe not the most power in the world...I think that utilizing my skills, keeping it on the feet and clubbing him in the head with my left shouldn't be too much of a problem." - Leben on Akiyama (BjPenn.com)

Leben ended up defeating Akiyama via Trianlge Choke with only 20 seconds remaining in the fight. Akiyama arguably took the first two rounds of this back and forth slugfest, but the end result saw Leben capturing his 2nd win in just 14 days. On a night where all of the buzz was surrounding a colossal showdown between  Lesnar and Carwin, these two Middleweights provided a worthy 14 minutes and 40 seconds of relentless action that earned my vote for MMA Fight of the Year.

Liddell officially retires, accepts job as UFC VP of Business Development

UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell announced his retirement in Vegas today at the press conference for Saturday night's UFC 125.

According MMAJunkie Liddell will now become the UFC Vice President of Business Development.

"He's seen this sport evolve from a very niche sport to .... a worldwide sport. He's going to be very involved."  - UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta

Liddell ends his career with an impressive 21-8 record spanning from 1998-2010 . Despite an unimpressive 1-5 finish in the twilight of a storied career, Chuck peaked from 99 - 02 sporting a 10-0 record in combat. After going 1-2 during the 5 months following, Chuck popped off 7 straight wins inside the Octagon, 4 of which were successful Light Heavyweight Title Defenses.

Chuck's most notable victories:

• UFC 31 (May 4, 2001) KO victory over Kevin Randleman (Round 1, 1:18)
• UFC 37.5 (June 22,2002) UD victory over Vitor Belfort
• UFC 40 (November 22, 2002) KO victory over Babalu Sobral (Round 1, 2:55)
• Pride Total Elimination 2003 (August 10, 2003) KO victory over Alistair Overeem (Round 1, 3:09)

• UFC 52 (April 16, 2005) KO victory over Randy Couture for UFC Light Heavyweight Championship (Round 1, 2:06)
• UFC 57 (February 4, 2006) KO victory over Randy Couture (Round 2, 1:28)
• UFC 62 (August 26, 2006) KO victory over Babalu Sobral (Round 1, 1, 1:35)
• UFC 66 (December 30, 2006) TKO victory over Tito Ortiz (Round 3, 3:59)
• UFC 79 (December 29, 2007) UD victory over Wanderlei Silva

2010 Breakout Fighter of the Year: Showtime

Anthony Pettis started his 2010 campaign coming off the first loss of his career by the hands of Bartimus Palaszewski via Split Decision at WEC 45. Fast forward a year, 4 consecutive victories, and one showtime kick later, Pettis finds himself sitting in the number #1 Contender seat, poised to claim UFC Lightweight Gold. Not bad for a years work.

Faber vs. Wineland headed for UFC 128

Former WEC champs Urijah Faber and Eddie Wineland will make their UFC debuts March 19th in Newark, New Jersey. The Bantamweight Contest will likely appear on the PPV portion of UFC 128: Shogun vs. Evans card.

Schaub vs. Cro Cop headed for UFC 128

FightersOnly reports that Brendan Schaub will now face Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 128. Yesterday it was reported that Schaub would take on Stefan Struve inside the cage instead of Frank Mir this coming March. Apparently both of those fights have been scrapped with the final result being Schaub vs. Cro Cop on March 19th in New Jersey.

Rumor has it that this shuffling of opponents for Schaub may have to do with Brock Lesnar being off and on about coaching TUF 13 with Frank Mir. Word around the campfire is that Lesnar may opt for one last payday with the WWE before calling it a combat sports career. Key word being rumor.

Schaub calls out Mir, gets Struve instead

It looked as though UFC Heavyweight Brendan Schaub's request was answered earlier this month. MMAJunkie reported that the TUF 10 Alum would indeed be facing off against Mir during one of the many planned March events.

Sportsnet.CA learned earlier today that Schaub will have to deal with the *Skyscraper* Stefan Struve on March 3rd instead. This bout will likely Co- Headline UFC on Versus 3: Sanchez vs. Kampmann which may take place in Louisville, Kentucky.

Hardy vs. Johnson targeted for March

MMAFighting reports a Welterweight battle between Nottingham's Dan Hardy (23-8) and Anthony *Rumble* Johnson (8-3) is in the works for UFC Fight Night 24 in Seattle.

This, 1 of 3 UFC events taking place during the month of March, goes down on the 26th and will air for free via Spike TV. If this fight does indeed end up on said card it would surely snatch Co-Headliner status.

A Light Heavyweight contest between Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Tito Ortiz is the current front runner for Main Event status on this yet to be officially announced Seattle Card.

Having been sidelined since late 2009, Johnson is coming off a loss against Josh Koscheck that won them Fight of the Night Honors at UFC 106: Ortiz vs. Griffin 2. His most notable win came by way of KO against Yoshiyuki Yoshida, a mere 41 seconds into the fight.

Hardy will be coming off a 2010 he'd love to forget. A 2010 where he went 0-2, coming off a very memorable 3-0 2009 campaign. Although losses against top Welterweights Georges St. Pierre , and Carlos Condit (the first man to ever KO Hardy) are nothing to be ashamed of, no one wants to drop 3 straight in the Octagon.

Cro Cop will return by February 2011

hov-mma 2011

Here are a few things we can expect from hov-mma this coming year:

• Less Coverage. Instead of doing the ole 9-5 in past years, this year we will be working full time as well as schooling full time. If you've followed this blog you can see I clearly need more education. This will be a positive when all is said and done. Maybe in a couple years we will actually have a decent looking website here.

• Honest Rankings. Until we are being paid to lie about our rankings we will continue to be honest. Our rankings are really just one man's opinion and until I am being paid to change my opinion they will remain that way. Even if we do end up getting paid in future years, I will lie to you and tell you they are honest in order to make myself more money. : )

• A continued B.J. Penn bias. Penn is responsible for some of the most violent finishes in the history of the sport. If it wasn't for B.J. Penn this site would have never come into fruition. His fights and the build up to his fights will continue to get more coverage than most. Just the way it is around here.

• Focus on violence and trash talk. Because we love it.

• Focus on the pride and honor of the sport. We love that shit too.

• Prizes! Keep your eyes on this spot come May 2011 for a month long Pick Em contest for our 1 year Anniversary . Whomever picks the most winners during the month of May from all of the major MMA events will win a prize TBA  (the prize will be announced before the contest starts). It shouldn't be that hard considering about 5 people (my best friend, my girlfriend, my mom, your mom, and some random asshole) read this site... so stay tuned!

• More focus on Michigan and Ontario Martial Arts. Because that's where we are based mutha fuckas.

• Manny Pacquiao Coverage. Everyone else is doing it. It was inevitable. He mesmerizes us.

• Continued Ellis Mania coverage.

• Continued overuse of bullet points.

• Forums, Boards, etc. Things to get you more involved while we continue to build slowly but surely.

• Basically what you can expect is one of the thousands of Fight blogs to remain afloat here providing you with summaries of stories from the best sites in the world. with links to those great stories and sites, original dry wit and humor that you will either love or hate, parties, contests, girls, booze & pizza. Hang out with us.

2010 Submission of the Year: "Be Cool Master, I'll submit him."

UFC 117
August 7, 2010
Oakland, California

Anderson Silva submits Chael Sonnen via Triangle Armbar

After taking a beating for 4 and a half rounds from a man with juiced testosterone levels, Anderson Silva survived the ear boxing, the takedowns & the pillow punches by employing the philosophy of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. He let his opponent lose the fight.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira on the submission: "We were very worried about his wound, but he made a good choice, he decided to fight! It looks crazy, I even posted in my twitter account (twitter.com/Minotauromma) , the very last seconds before he entered the Octagon, he told me "Be cool Master, I'll submit him). Anderson is a really dangerous athlete, he looking for that triangle since the second round and at the fourth, he almost knocked Sonnen out. No doubt that all of his anti-professional bad talk made Anderson even thirstier for victory, his technical level and his champion heart took him to finish the fight with only one minute to go!! Not everyone can do that!! Anderson definitely filled us with proud!!" (Tatame.com)

2010 KO of the Year: An American Welterweight in London

UFC 120
October 16, 2010
London, England

The final minute of the 1st Round in this highly anticipated Welterweight showdown saw both fighers connecting with a left hook after finishing with a right handed punch. Condit's landed right on Hardy's jaw, causing him to take a short nap in front of his home crowd. Hardy's landed a millisecond later on the side of Condit's neck.

For all of the folks who claim Georges St. Pierre has cleaned out his division, not once, but twice. I give you... Carlos Condit.

UFC 128: Shogun vs. Evans moved to Jersey

Michigan State University Alum Rashad Evans attempts to become a 2-Time UFC Light Heavyweight Champion on March 19th in Newark, New Jersey . The title shot that he earned back in May with a victory over Quinton *Rampage* Jackson was originally scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi, marking the second time in as many years the UFC would've visited the United Arab Emirates. Instead Mauricio *Shogun* Rua, fresh off his third knee surgery, will make his first title defense in the UFC since his KO of the once unbeatable Lyoto Machida back in May. Here is the rumored card so far:

• UFC Light Heavyweight Bout: Mauricio Rua (19-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) vs. Rashad Evans (15-1-1 MMA, 10-1-1 UFC)

Tito Ortiz (15-8-1 MMA, 14-8-1 UFC) vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueria (19-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC). A loss for Ortiz make him 0-5-1 in his last 6 fights which would result in release from the UFC.

Frank Mir (14-5 MMA, 12-5 UFC) vs. Brendan Schaub (7-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC). This fight is scheduled to take place in March of 2011 which means it will be featured on the Main Card of  this event or headline UFC Fight Night 24 on March 26th, or even co - headline UFC on Versus 3: Sanchez vs. Kampmann on March 3rd.

Kurt Pellegrino (15-5 MMA, 7-4 UFC) vs. Gleison Tibau (21-7 MMA, 7-5 UFC)

Michihiro Omigawa (12-8-1 MMA, 0-2 UFC) vs. Chad Mendes (9-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC)

Strikeforce 30: *Jacare* vs. Lawler

Strikeforce Light Heavy Weight Champion Ronaldo *Jacare* Souza will make his first title defense in San Jose at Stikeforce 30: Jacare vs. Lawler according to Sherdog.

Other fights rumored for this card include a rubber match between Jason *Mayhem* Miller and Tim Kennedy, and the usual Herschel Walker vs. TBA.

Couture retired..unless...

5 Time UFC Champion Randy Couture called it quits via his Twitter earlier this week. That is unless the UFC gives him Former Light Heavy Weight Champion Lyoto Machida or Current Champ Mauricio  *Shogun* Rua.

Loretta Hunt, writer for the LA Times, reported this past Tuesday that the time is right , and he does indeed think's he's done. A Couture vs. Machida match up would be a win win situation for the UFC. Machida wins, The Dragon is back. Couture wins, with 4 wins in a row and one against a top 10 guy, send the Natural off with a title shot against the winner of Rua vs. Evans.

MMA GIF of the Year: Pettis Ninja Cage Kick

Anthony Pettis defeated Ben Henderson at the Final WEC event in History Thursday night via Unanimous Decision (48-47, 49-46, 48-47) to become the final WEC Lightweight Champion of All Time.

Living up to and beyond his nick name of *Showtime*, Pettis landed a flying ninja cage kick on the chin of Henderson with a little over a minute remaining in the 5th and Final Round. You could not script a better finale for one of the most exciting promotion's of all time.

With his victory over Henderson, Pettis awaits the winner of the UFC Lightweight Championship bout between current Champ Frankie Edgar and challenger Gray Maynard at UFC 125 to unify the WEC and UFC belts.

Dominick Cruz: UFC Bantamweight Champion

Photo : MMAWeekly

The Alpha and the Omega. The First UFC Bantamweight Champion. The Final WEC Batmanweight Champion. Dominick Cruz proved why he is far and away the 135 LB MMA King with a 5 Round domination of #1 contender Scott *Young Guns* Jorgensen at the Final World Extreme Cagefighting event Thursday night.

One of the most exciting and fast paced fighters in the 135 LB division, Scott Jorgensen, like many fighters before him could not solve the riddle that is Dominick Cruz. Cruz appeared to be in fast forward through all 5 rounds of the fight, keeping an inhuman pace while landing strikes from unheard of angles, showing why he remains one of the Pound for Pound best in the sport.

When asked post fight who he'd like to make his first title defense against, Cruz requested the only man to hand him a loss in his MMA career. Urijah Faber.

Dominick Cruz defeats Scott Jorgensen via Unanimous Decision (50-45 x 3) to retire the WEC Bantamweight Belt and become the 1st UFC Bantamweight Champion.

WEC 53 Pick EM

Photo via: Tracy Lee/Combat Lifestyle

The Final WEC event in history will also be our Final Pick EM of the year. Hopefully next year we can bring in some special guests!

UFC 124: 3-8 (ouch)
2010: 104-55

Main Card:

• WEC Lightweight Championship: Ben Henderson (C) vs. Anthony Pettis

Both of these men are submission artists in their own right. Bendo prefers the guillotine, while Pettis enjoys the triangle choke. Watch for the Smooth one to soften Pettis up a little on his feet and finish him via guillotine in the later rounds. Henderson via submission.

• WEC Bantamweight Championship: Dominick Cruz (C) vs. Scott Jorgensen

Scotty "Young Guns" Jorgensen via TKO! Your first UFC Bantamweight Champion of the World.

Donald Cerrone vs. Chris Horodecki

The Cowboy finishes his storied WEC career with a deadly finish over a game fighter in The Polish Hammer. Cerrone via TKO.

Bart Palaszewski vs. Kamal Shalorus:

Shalorus's last fight (a headliner that ended in a draw against Jamie Varner at WEC 49) was a total abomination. Hopefully Palaszewski punishes him for it. Palaszewski via KO.

Preliminary Card:

• Zhang Tie Quan vs. Danny Downes

Downes can throw but once this goes to the ground its all over for Danny Boy. Tie Quan via submission.

• Jamie Varner vs. Shane Roller

After winning his first 4 fights in the WEC, Varner has put up a record of 0-2-1 so far in 2010. I don't see him heading into the UFC winless in 4 straight even against someone as legit as Roller. Varner via decision.

• Brad Pickett vs. Ivan Menijivar

Pickett looked more impressive in his last fight against Scott Jorgensen at WEC 50 than the 30-27 judges ruling showed. Look for him to box in Menijivar's ears in during this one. Pickett via KO.

GSP's Top 3 Trash Talker's

#1 - Dan Hardy (full article at MMAFighting)

"The top trash talker, one of the best was Dan Hardy, because he was smart. He's a very clever guy and he was very good trash talking. Even if I was allowed to speak French in a trash talk war with him, I would've never won. He's very good at it."

#2 - B.J. Penn

"I'd say B.J. Penn was a good trash talker, not because what he said was smart, but because he attacked me on a personal point, saying I take steroids and stuff like that , which is very bad to say that because now you go beyond the promotion of fighting to attacking the guy personally."

#3 - Josh Koscheck

" I would say he's not as clever as Dan Hardy, but not as bad as B.J. Penn either. I would put him third. It's always the same thing in every fight. Some guys try to trash talk more than others. He's not the biggest trash talker I ever fought but he's pretty good. I have to give it to him, he's one of the best, one of the most arrogant guys. I'd say he's in the top three most arrogant guys I've ever fought and it's good, it makes me very motivated."

UFC 124: St. Pierre vs. Koscheck Pick EM

TUF 12 Finale: 9-2
Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu: 5-0
2010: 101- 47 (68.2 %)

I really should stop while I'm ahead. Honestly I do not see myself doing this good next year. This may or may not be a once in a lifetime hot streak. Nevertheless here we go with the 2nd to last pick em of the season!

Main Card:

Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck

After the initial shock and hard on wear off when Koscheck realizes GSP has decided to stand and trade with him, Koscheck will knock out GSP, capping off a shocking year of upsets in MMA. Georges St. Pierre is the more well rounded fighter here and would win this fight 8 out of 10 times. Not on December 11th.

Stefan Struve vs. Sean McCorkle

In the most anticipated Co- Main Event of all time (sorry), Stefan Struve makes quick work of *Big Sexy*. McCorkle can tweet about it later.

Jim Miller vs. Charles Oliviera

Both of Miller's losses come from the gentleman who will fight for the UFC LW title on Jan 1st. Oliviera has yet to lose in his MMA career. This is the contest fight fans will be keeping a close eye on tomorrow night. Oliviera takes a huge step up the LW ladder winning this one via submission.

Joe Stevenson vs. Mac Danzig

Danzig got a raw deal in his last fight which was stopped prematurely leaving him 1-4 in his last 5 UFC fights. The only way he can save his job here is with a victory or a FOTN performance in defeat. Just don't see it happening against *Joe Daddy*. Stevenson via TKO.

Thiago Alves vs. John Howard

In recent history Alves tends to win fights against dudes not named Georges St. Pierre or Jon Fitch. Dude has scary demon like power. Alves via something nasty.

UFC.com Live Stream Card:

Joe Doerksen vs. Dan Miller

Two things come to mind when I look at this fight. #1. Doerksen fights alot. #2. It's never a good thing when two brothers fight on the same card. Doerksen via submission.

Mark Bocek vs. Dustin Hazelett

McLovin' belongs right here at Lightweight. Hazelett via submission.

John Howard: "I'm so happy to fight a stand up fighter."

"That's what I do. I stand and bang."

"My 3rd MMA fight I lost my front tooth. What pissed me off so much, the 2nd Round I went back in there, fought & he still whipped my butt & I came back, got a heel hook & broke his ankle. After that I knew I could go on  being a Mixed Martial Artist."

Strikeforce closes out 2010 Strong & Violent

photo by Esther Lin for STRIKEFORCE

On a night where the UFC was marred by poor judging and lackluster fights, Strikeforce delivered with a quick and satisfying fight card. Although the promotion hit more than a few rough patches during 2010, Strikeforce closes out the year with a card that featured three exciting 1st Round highlight reel knockout finishes in a row. When a lot of professional sports comes down to simply *what have you done for me lately* Strikeforce is doing just fine heading into 2011.

Showtime Televised Main Card Results:

• Dan Henderson defeats Renato *Babalu* Sobral via KO (punches to the face) at 1:53 of the 1st Round that left Babalu bloody and unconscious. With a victory over Sobral, Hendo earns a shot at the Strikeforce LHW title currently owned by Rafael *Feijao* Cavalcante

Paul Daley face plants Scott Smith with a one punch KO at the 2:09 marker of Round 1. Daley called out K.J. Noons after finishing Smith.

Robbie Lawler finishes Matt Lindland 50 seconds into the 1st Round with a deadly KO that may have finished Lindland's career. It took *The Law* quite some time to get back up after after this one.

Antonio *Bigfoot* Silva defeats Mike Kyle via TKO (punches) 2:49 into the 2nd Round. Kyle dropped Silva in the 1st Round, dominating him with a recorded 110 strikes according to FightMetric . Silva regained his composure and finished Kyle with *Bigfoot* like bombs from mount position in the 2nd Round.

Ovince St. Preux defeats Benji Radach via UD (30-27, 30-26, 30-25) in a dominant performance that could've been stopped a number of times.

Chael Sonnen breaks his silence on Inside MMA

TUF 12 Team GSP vs. Team Koscheck Finale Pick EM

Main Card:
• Jonathan Brookins (11-3) vs. Michael Johnson (8-4)

I've learned the hard way many a time that picking with your heart is never a positive. That said I'll be going with Brookins. Very hard not to root for this guy after taking in all of season 12. Dude could be a major threat at 55 & 45 on the big stage.

Stephan Bonnar (12-7) vs. Igor Pokrajac (22-7)

When folks saw these two gentlemen on the poster for the TUF 12 fnale they said why? I say why not. Go ahead and give these guys their Fight on the Night bonus right now. Bonnar by decision.

Demian Maia (13-2) vs. Kendall Grove (12-7)

I'll go with the obvious choice here. Maia via sub.

Johny Hendricks (9-0) vs. Rick Story (11-3)

Story via decision in another FOTN candidate.

Nam Phan (16-7) vs. Leonard Garcia (14-6-1)

The first televised UFC Featherweight bout in history. If Garcia can stomach Phan's deadly body shots I don't see how he loses this fight. Garcia via TKO.
